Do you know what it means to be “General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliant” for your organization? Do you know what the consequences are if your organization doesn’t respect the new data privacy laws? Do you know how to avoid potential security threats that can impact your business? …
The GDPR is a regulation that intends to strengthen and harmonize data privacy laws across Europe. It aims to protect and empower all citizen’s data privacy within the European Union (EU) and to reshape the way organizations across the region approach data privacy.
The primary purpose of the GDPR is to enable citizens to reclaim/take control of their personal data, which is any information that can be used to directly or indirectly identify a person. It can be anything from a name, a picture, an e-mail address, bank details, posts on social networking websites, medical information or a IP address. Another goal is to simplify the regulatory environment for international businesses by unifying the regulation within the EU.
The GDPR not only applies to organizations located within the EU but also to organizations outside of the EU if they offer goods or services to EU citizens which might require personal data sharing. In other words, it applies to all companies processing and holding data of people residing in the EU, regardless of the company’s location.
