The General Data Protection Regulation constitutes a regulation. Unlike a directive, it becomes enforceable from 25th May 2018 after a two-year transition period. Through this regulation adopted on April 27th 2016, the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission have the objective of strengthening and unifying data protection for all citizen located in the European Union.

Any company – based in Europe or not – that will sell products, services, or export data related to European individuals, will be obliged to adhere to the GDPR. This regulation aims to offer veritable control to citizens and residents over their personal data.
