Considering doing away with video length constraints, Instagram is preparing to launch a new feature that will let users post long-form clips of up to an hour, according to the Wall Street Journal. This new creative flexibility brings Instagram closer to YouTube. The platform described this new plan as a tentative and could ultimately decide to reverse the situation.
With this new feature, Instagram also aims to focus on vertical video. This pursues the same logic as the stories format. There is no clarification whether longer videos would be allowed only in the stories section or if it this will be also permitted in the main feed.
15 seconds is at present the length limitation for Instagram Stories, while videos in the main feed can run up to 60 seconds.
Over 300 million daily active users were reported end of 2017. Instagram counts over 800 million users around the world.
